Served as Extension District Director (26 counties) in Nebraska and Extension Specialist in Texas and Arizona. Research career (17 years) focused on control and management of invasive plant species on rangelands using herbicides and/or fire. International experience in Africa, Australia and Latin America.

Research centered on herbicidal control of woody weeds on rangelands. Three herbicides - clopyralid, triclopyr and tebuthiuron - were labeled for rangeland use on the basis of this research. A major effort in woody plant physiology was initiated to better time the application of herbicides. Efforts were also taken to investigate the use of controlled burning to complement herbicidal control of shrubs.
